My son is 9 and going to be a first year squirt. The kids are not taking hard shots yet. I want my son to be safe/comfortable but I dont want to overspend.
The differences between the two masks are:
- interior foams - the NME3 has a single layer of VN foam, and the NME 5 has a dual layer of foam (harder layer agains the shell, softer layer against the head). The combination of a harder and softer layer of foams is the most protective.
- NME3 comes with a chrome, round bar cage, and the NME 5 comes with a powder coated (gray) flat bar cage. The flat bar is a little stronger, and it's a bit easier to see out of.
Regardless of the option that you choose, the most important consideration is fit. If the mask doesn't fit properly then it won't be protective. See the attached video on how to properfly fit a goalie mask.
