"Blocking/Butterfly" pads tend to have fewer breaks and are more rigid - better for goalies with a wider butterfly.

The 7110 Velocity 5 leg pad is designed to provide many of the features of the 7800 Velocity 5 Pro leg pad, but with construction and flex options designed specifically for the youth goaltender.  Each pad size is carefully proportioned and scaled for optimal fit so that all of the flex points are correctly located for fast and easy break in.

The 7110 has HD foam in both the internals of the pad, and also in the outer roll.  This foam acts to keep the pad rigid, and helps it retain it's shape and minimize twist.  Some youth model pads use lower density foams which both compress over time, and allow the pads to twist out of shape.  The boot break in the pad is very flexible, and the boot scoop is also tapered on the inside.  The soft boot allows the goalies ankle to move more freely while attached to the pad, and the tapered boot allows the goalie to keep the inside edge of his skate blade on the ice while striding or pushing off.  Traditional knee rolls and Vaughn's popular "V5" graphic - the same graphic that the NHL goalies wear - complete the look of the pad face.

The interior of the pad features a deep knee lock and boot channel to keep the pad square on the young goalie's leg.  The knee is secured in place by a large velcro strap that runs underneath the knee bend to pieces of LD foam that flank the leg, and next to this knee lock (on the inside of the leg) is a large LD foam block.  Together, these pieces will hold the pad in place, and they will also protect the knee against impacts on the ice when going into a butterfly position.  One leather boot strap holds the pad to the skate, and nylon straps with plastic clips run up the leg so that even the least experienced goalie can secure the pads easily.

The Key factor is the overall length. The length can be divided into three sections:

A.The boot

B.Instep to knee

C.Knee to top or thigh rise

The proper length of the goal pad boot is determined by the goalie's skate size. The next key area is the instep to knee that determines the shin length. Finally, the knee to top or thigh rise is a personal measurement depending on how much pant and pad overlap the goaltender prefers. A general rule is 7" to 8".

A.Skates size: provide the skate size for proper boot fit.

B.Instep to knee: measure from instep to the front center of kneecap while leg is in slightly bent position.

C. Thigh rise: measure from front center of kneecap up the thigh to desire height.

A + B + C = Estimated size of pad

If fitted properly, the goalie's knee should rest directly behind the center knee roll with the pad securely attached to the goal skate and properly strapped on the goaltender's leg. Generally, this will ensure that the pad breaks (bends) at the knee/shin and ankle as designed for optimal performance.

Goalie pad size, youth?

My 9 year old has a length of 15.5 inches from instep to the middle of the knee and 6 inches from the middle of the knee to mid-thigh. How do I figure his pad size?
Asked by: Heipfam
Strangely enough, you can get an accurate size with this pad by just taking your child's overall height and dividing by 2.

i am 50 inches. would the 26 1.5 fit me?

Asked by: Anonymous
With Vaughn youth pads, the fit formula is typically to take your overall height and divide by 2. Given that, your perfect fit would probably be a 25 if Vaughn made that size. Since they don't, then the 26 would probably be a touch big, but it should work fine. Just consult the fitting video on the product page to make sure that it fits properly once you get it.

goalie youth pads

My son has a skate size of 11. So the formula for sizing does not work. He is only seven and i would hope to also get another year from the pads depending on his growths spurts. His Ankle to mid knee is 12" and his mid thigh from mid knee is 5". We are also debating on +1 or +1.5 as well. Also debating between vaughn or bauer mid range for first purchased pair.

Honestly, the best formula for youth sizing is to take the goalie's height in inches and divide by 2. This will give you the best sizing. You won't notice much difference between a 1 and 1.5 thigh rise. If you have specific questions regarding Vaughn or Bauer mid-level Youth or Junior gear, please email info@totalgoalie.com or call 800-517-1238 and speak to one of our specialists.

How do you measure for youth goalie leg pads?

It doesn't work with my son's skate size which is a youth 11, because the measurement total for all 3 steps would exceed his total leg length. Also what does +1" mean?
Asked by: Anonymous
Correct, the pad measurement will not work with youth skates. Can you please email me your goalies overall height and his measurement from instep to knee, JMartin@TotalHockey.com . The +1 is a length that is added just to the "Thigh Rise" (Top of the knee cradle to the top of the pad), most goalies at the youth and even intermediate level use +1 and +1.5.
